Under His Shadow

"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty…" (Psalm 91:1)

We now pass through turbulent times, politically, economically and socially with the whole world being engulfed in violence and terrorism and spiritual darkness and with our Church having a name but being dead. Nowadays, the people of God throughout the world may be concerned about their safety, following the terrorists’ attack on the WTC in USA and the acts of violence and terrorism in other parts of the world.  In the electronic and print media,  we come across daily gruesome accidents which are likened to  “the destruction that lays waste at noonday” and dreaded diseases like “the perilous pestilence that walks in darkness”.  We may be worried about our school-going children, about our dear ones working in different offices and factories, about our loved ones staying abroad or traveling by air or by road.  But what the Word of God says?  Prophet Hosea lamented, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge”!  The Word of God in Psalm 91 says that there is security for His people under His shadow. There is a secret place for God's people under His shadow.  Our security lies in the secret place of the Most High, and not in the might of our nations.   When I was a child, my parents and the Sunday School teachers persuaded me to memorize this entire Psalm.  Without knowing the significance of this wonderful Psalm, I memorized it.  Today, many of us are like that. Though many of us may recite this Psalm from memory, yet we hardly take God at His Word.  We should claim and appropriate His promises.

Secondly, we hardly intercede for the members of His Body scattered all over the world, claiming His promises.  We are all “members of His Body, of His flesh, and of His bones” (Eph.5:30). Dear child of God, do you have the mind of Christ to agonize for the members of His body who face afflictions? If we fail to intercede for the members of His Body, the devil would try to afflict His body.  Let us remember the model prayer taught by our Lord to His disciples.  In that prayer, we find the word “we” and not “I”.  Similarly, let us pray not only for our own needs or for the people of our own circle but also for the members of His body all over the world, claiming His promises of deliverance from the perilous pestilence that walks in darkness and the destruction that lays waste at noonday.  Daily we ought to pray  “Our loving Heavenly Father, deliver Thy people from the pestilence that walks in darkness and the destruction that lays waste at noonday and keep them under Thy shadow".  The devil will never and cannot enter His shadow to afflict His people. May God make you an intercessor for the body of Christ!

"A Small Cloud

Will you please meditate on I Kings 18:41-48? The Lord has a message for you. In the days of Elijah, the prophet and Ahab, the King of Israel, there was a drought in the land of Israel. Similarly, you may be facing a spiritual drought in your life or ministry.  “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of abundance of rain”, Elijah tells Ahab.  Ahab, accordingly, went up to eat and drink.  Elijah went up to the top of Carmel, bowed down on the ground and put his face between his knees. Elijah said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea”.

Then it came to pass the SEVENTH TIME that the servant said, “There is a cloud, as small as a man’s hand, rising out of the sea”.  So Elijah said, “Go up, say to Ahab, “Prepare your chariot and go down before the rain stops you”.

Now it happened, in the mean time that the sky became black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy rain.

Dear child of God, you would have sought the intercessory prayers of some minister of God for a miracle in your life.  Since you have experienced no miracle, you have now become disheartened.  Six times you have seen “nothing”.  Now the SEVENTH TIME has arrived in your life, and you are hearing a small voice “Go again”. As you read this message, you can see “a small cloud, as small as a man’s hand”.  You can now see a little evidence of the ensuing great blessing upon your life.  With this small cloud, you should now trust God and be happy.  There will be a sudden outpouring of His blessing in your life. Dear minister of God, there will be a great outpouring of His anointing on your ministry in a manner never imagined by you. The God of Elijah is alive today to perform the same miracle for you. Amen.

"An Altar of Earth"

God said to Moses, “An altar of earth you shall make for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen.  In every place where I record My name, I will come to you, and I will bless you” (Exo.20: 24).

You might have already made an altar of earth by sacrificing some thing or the other in your earthly life for the Lord.  It may be a sacrifice of your time and comfort for intercessory prayers.  It may be your sacrificial offerings for the missionary work.  It may be your sacrificial financial help for an orphanage or an old age home.  It may be your sacrificial offerings to your church.  You might have offered a portion of your house or land for the Lord’s work.  In your office, you might have served your employer in a sacrificial manner, fearing God.  The Lord now says to you, “I will come to you and I will bless you” because He has recorded His Name in that very place where you have sacrificed for Him.

Dear pastor, you would have continued to sacrifice your time and comfort for serving your congregation members without expecting any reward from the Lord.  Dear evangelist, you would have traveled far and wide to preach the gospel at the cost of your health.  It is now time for the Lord to come to you and to bless you.  You need not ask Him for His blessings because your sacrifices have come up for a memorial before God.  He remembers all the sacrifices made by His people at the altar, and needs no reminders from them in this regard. The quantum of your sacrifice hardly matters here.  Even if you have given 1$ to our God, it means that you have sacrificed that 1$ because you could have spent that money for meeting your own need. In the sight of God, that 1$ is very precious because you have sacrificially given to Him.  God will definitely visit the place of your sacrifice i.e. the altar.

He now comes to you with His hands full of blessings.  His blessings may be a mighty anointing of His spirit on your ministry or an abundance of His finances.  As you read this message, you can see your Lord standing by your side and can hear His small voice, “I have come to bless you” Amen.

Clay in the Potter’s Hand

As commanded by the Lord, Jeremiah the prophet went to the potter’s house where the potter was making some thing at the wheel.  And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so, he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make.  Then the Lord said to Jeremiah, “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter…. Look, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel” (Jer.18: 1-6).

Dear child of God, you are the clay in the Lord’s hand.    God allows the trials and tribulations that you face with a special purpose. Your faith is being tested through fire.  No doubt, you were marred in the hand of the Potter.  However, the Potter still holds you in His hand to make you again into another vessel.  He will not rest until another vessel is made. Do not resist the tempest, which is allowed of God to make you into another vessel. Through every suffering, the Lord is making you into a vessel of His choice. “Woe to him who strives with his Maker!  Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth.  Shall the clay say to Him who forms it ‘What are you making’ Or shall your handiwork say, ‘He has no hands? Woe to him who says to his father ‘What are you begetting or to the woman, ‘What have you brought forth?’” (Is.45: 9-10).

Dear child of God, you are the clay in the Potter’s hand.  The Lord chooses only humble people like you who consider themselves as the clay taken from the earth.  You may not consider yourself as a vessel of gold or of silver.

Baptist John cried: “Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill brought low….” (Luke 3:5).  Those servants of God who exalt themselves as the mountain and hill, or who consider themselves as the golden or silver vessels in the Hand of God just because they have been bestowed with certain spiritual gifts, shall be brought low, and those servants of God who consider themselves as the dust of the earth or as the valley shall be filled.

Dear servant of God, you may not be a great orator on the pulpit.  You may not have enough money to organize any evangelical crusade.  But, if you are a man with “a contrite and humble spirit” (Is.57: 15), you will become the clay in the Potter’s hand and the Lord will make you a vessel of His choice. Though you were marred in His Hand in the past, you will be shaped and made into another vessel meet for the Master’s use if you have a “humble spirit”. The Lord tells you, “As the clay is in the potter’s hand, as are you in my Hand”.

“Cast the net on the right side”

Let us meditate on John 21:1-6. After His resurrection, Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias. Simon Peter and the other disciples went in for fishing.  That night they caught nothing.  But when the morning approached, Jesus stood on the shore but they knew not that it was Jesus.  Jesus asked them, “Children, have ye any meat?”  They answered Him, “No”.  Then Jesus said unto them, “Cast the net on the right side of the ship and ye shall find”.  They accordingly cast the net and they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

Similarly, dear disciple of Christ, you have been toiling all these days and casting your net for a blessing.  It has been eluding you for a long time.  Now the night is gone and the dawn has come in your life.  The night has to be invariably followed by the morning.  How long the night will last? It will not be there forever.  Jesus is now standing on the shore. Now you may not be recognizing Him. However, He has a great concern for you.  He does not bother about what you have done for Him.  His immediate concern is your welfare.  He asks you, “Have you any meat?”

Meat means material blessing or divine healing or miracle. Any blessing on your material life can be called as meat.  You have been casting your net on the wrong side of your ship all these days.  There is a right side of your ship.  The blessing in abundance is not far off.  It is very nearer you than you imagine and is within your reach.

If your marriage life is broken for a long time, it is now time for you to cast the net on the right side.  You have to take a step towards the right side.  You must go to your spouse and tell him/her that Jesus wants you to live with him/her and that you love him/her without any prejudice.  If you are on the look out for a particular job, you must now apply for a similar job, which will be far better than the job you look for. If you are incurring heavy losses in your present business, you must now look for a similar business in the same field.  If your present ministry to God is not yielding the desired result, you should now cast your net on the right side where the Holy Spirit leads you.  You may be now pasturing a church against your calling because God has called you to be an evangelist.  You should now abide in your evangelical calling.  If you are suffering from an incurable disease for a long time, you should now cast your net on the right side by taking a step of faith.  Throw away the medicine and praise Jesus for healing you through His precious blood. Take a bottle of oil, pray over it and apply the oil on the affected part of your body saying, “This is the Blood of Jesus shed for healing me”. For this purpose, you need not go to any servant of God.

“Come and Dine”

Let us meditate on the same 19th chapter of  John (verses 7-14), in continuation of the preceding message, “Cast the net on the right side” .  When Jesus commanded His disciples to cast the net on the right side of the ship, they implicitly obeyed Him with the result that they caught fish full of the net.  As they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it along with bread.  Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught”.

Let us note here that before they could bring the net full of large fish, one hundred and fifty three, Jesus had already lit a fire of coals and laid some fish on it along with bread.  He invited them to “come and dine”.  Even if the disciples had disobeyed Him and had not eventually caught any fish, Jesus would not have left them to go hungry because He had already roasted some fish and made bread with His own hands, which were enough for His beloved disciples.  He knew that His beloved disciples had been hungry.

Even if some of you had not cast the net on the right side as commanded by the Lord,   Jesus still loves you so much He has already prepared some roasted fish and bread for you, irrespective of whether you had cast the net on the right side or not.

The same Jesus who is the same yesterday, today and forever loves you in the same manner as He loved His early disciples.  He has come prepared to bless you.  He has got some special blessing for you.  He now beseeches you, “My beloved, come and dine”.

Jesus rebuking the great tempest in your life today!

"Behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but He (Jesus) was asleep" (Mat.8:24). Here, Matthew tells us about a great tempest that struck the ship in which Jesus and His beloved disciples traveled. That was the very ship Jesus commanded His disciples to get into. The disciples obeyed Him and entered this ship. Then that ship was hit by a great tempest. Dearly beloved in Christ, you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior and have decided to follow Him in His ship. Many preachers preach today that after accepting Christ Jesus, you should have only bliss and not sorrow; you would receive only miracles and not disasters.

Behold, a great tempest has arisen in your life today. Somebody has told you that your sins have invited the wrath of God and that the divine judgment has now come to devour you. Do you know that your Beloved Jesus, though He appears sleeping, is still in your ship?

There arose a great tempest! The ship was covered with the waves. There was no way out for the disciples to escape. They could not swim to safety because the ship was covered with the violent waves. They had no other option but to call on the Lord. They awoke Him, saying, "Lord, save us: we perish". Even if they had not called on the Lord, they would not have perished at all because Jesus was with them. Annoyed with their cry or SOS, Jesus rebuked them saying, "Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?" (Matt.8:26).

Today, you may be fearful and may be wondering why this misfortune has befallen you, though you have been following the Lord faithfully. Oh, this great tempest has hit you not just because you have not given your tithes to God or not just because you have not spent enough time in prayers or not just because you have not been actively engaged in His vineyard.

This great tempest has hit you because He loves you very much. You may wonder as to why He should send you this great tempest if He loves you. This great tempest has come into your life because He loves you ETERNALLY. The eternal love of Christ Jesus does allow the great tempest in our lives. You will never know Him very intimately when everything goes on well with you. You will never know more of Him when you get only the bliss. You will know more of Him only when the great tempest hits you or when you pass through the furnace of afflictions.

The "eternal" love or the divine love is different from the human love. It cannot be defined in any dictionary. The human love bestows on you happiness in life whereas the eternal love of God bestows on you salvation or eternal life. The eternal love unfolds the incomprehensible love of Christ for His elect – the sheltering love which covers the multitude of sins; the sublime love which blinds the holy eye of the Bridegroom to the wretchedness and unworthiness of His beloved; the flaming love which cannot be quenched by "many waters"; the lofty love which cannot be drowned by "the floods", the precious love which cannot be valued in mere monetary terms. Only the floods or the fire reveals the eternal love of Christ.

It is the great tempest, and not ordinary tempest that reveals the full Person of Christ to us. The Holy Spirit inspired and enabled me to write my book "The Voice of My Beloved" over a long period of 15 years. I spent most of this period in the furnace of afflictions only. The Holy Spirit taught me about the love of Christ through every verse from the book of Song of Songs as I wrote my book. I faced tempest after tempest and the great tempest in my life while writing this book.

The same Jesus is in your ship today. He did slumber for a while when His disciples were traveling in the ship because He was in flesh. To your eyes, He may appear sleeping. But He never slumbers today. The Holy Spirit in you is powerful and mighty. He reveals Christ to you through this school of suffering. You will never perish at all. The great tempest in the Christian life brings him very close to Christ.

As the disciples called on Jesus, He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm (Mat.8:26). The disciples of Jesus were not forsaken but were saved by their Master on hearing their SOS. Today your SOS has reached His ears. He has heard your prayers. Dear sister in Christ, this message comes to you only. Do not think it is meant for some other person. It is you whom the Lord calls "blessed" because you have been in your ship being hit by the great tempest. Dear minister of God, your ministry has been hit by this great tempest so that your faith in human help has been nullified. Call on Him now, saying, "Save us: we perish". God does allow the great tempest in our lives so that we may learn to trust Him all the more and not to continue to trust in human help.
